Ranjit Singh, el maharajá del Punjab, gobernó el imperio sij desde 1801 hasta su muerte en 1839. Ranjit Singh, the Maharaja of the Punjab, ruled the Sikh Empire from 1801 to his death in 1839. Although he commanded an expansive Empire for nearly four decades, the Maharaja held a particular attachment to what is now known as the Gujranwala district as its main city, also called Gujranwala, was the capital of the Sukerchakia Misl, the state ruled by his family and predecessors. Ranjit Singh was born in Gujranwala city, and had the samadhi (tomb) of his father Mahan Singh erected within the city limits. As the region was dear to his heart, he built summer residence here, far from the bustle of the imperial capital in Lahore.

The residence stood on the east bank of the Chenab river in a region of Gujranwala that may have been familiar from Ranjit's childhood. Then as now, it is fairly isolated, located a few kilometers northeast of the nearby town of Rasul Nagar, and about 50 kilometers NNW of Gujranwala city and Ranjit Singh's birthplace. The house was built of high quality masonry and plaster, inset with teak doors and windows. Sturdy rafters, also made of teak, supported the roof. The core of the house comprised a tall double-height atrium flanked by a several of small rooms and two long verandahs. The overall design was comparable to a rusticated version of the Hazuri Bagh Baradari.
